About the Garmin Forerunner 230 activity tracker
Just because the Garmin Forerunner 230 has a long name, I’m going to refer it as the F230.
- The F230 is not only a watch, it is also an activity tracker that is able to give you information like step count, your calories, and distance throughout your day. With little vibrations from your watch, it can alert you when you need to be more active and start moving. NOTE- This watch does not come with a heart rate monitor(Sold Separately)
- Able to receive smart notifications with the F230 like emails, text messages, call alerts, calendar reminders, and more from your compatible smartphone.
- Receive audio prompts from your connected smartphone that include laps and lap times.
- A 44% larger screen than the F220
- The battery life for the F230 can last up to 16 hours in training mode and up to 5 weeks in watch mode.
With the Garmin Forerunner 23o, you are able to set up goals for yourself and push to achieve them to better yourself by downloading advanced workouts and trainings from Garmin Connect. You can customize your data fields, download watch faces, widgets and applications all for free.
With a built-in accelerometer, the F230 is able to capture distance and pace data when running on an indoor track or treadmill, with no need for a separate foot pod.
Throughout your day the F230 will count your steps and calories burned which is great for the people that like to know how far they walk in a day and how much calories they’ve burned to monitor weight and intake.
If you are being lazy during your day, the F230 will remind you to start moving after an hour or so of sitting on your butt.
The F230 is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellites to locate your position quickly and precisely whether you’re running deep in the woods or near very tall buildings.
Like the name Forerunner, this watch is made for runners of all types whether it be long distance or just for fun. This is a great watch to track your daily runs.
The F230 has basically everything an intermediate runner needs. It will track your distance, speed and pace with a very accurate GPS. If you are a runner and looking for a good running watch, this could be for you.
The F230 is great when it comes to locking onto satellites in a fast, quick and in a hurry, especially when trying to connect standing in the cold wearing shorts. No one wants to just stand around in the cold waiting to get a signal to start running. I tried that with the Tomtom runner and I wasn’t having it.
With the F230 you won’t have that problem.
Heart rate monitor
The F230 does not come with a built-in heart rate monitor but you could purchase one separately (click here for heart rate monitor).
With the F230, it is not accurate for high-intensity training so you are better off with the chest strap heart rate monitor anyway.
Point being made is if you are the kind of runner that wants a pinpointed heart rate accuracy, then the F230 is best for you when paired with a chest strap.
Is the Garmin Forerunner 230 waterproof?
The F230 is waterproof up to 50m. You can take it swimming, shower with it and wash your dishes with it with no problems. The F230 is made up of durable plastic that is really light and does come with a rubber sports strap that’s sweat resistant and designed for sport of course.
You don’t have to worry about running 10 miles and the chances of it raining is going to mess up your watch. You can run comfortable and with no worries. You wouldn’t want to pay money for something that is going to break on you if it gets wet like the Fitbit Blaze.
Always knowing what’s going on
When you are working out, at the back of your mind somewhere you’re wondering if you are missing any important emails, messages or phone calls.
With the F320, you’re able to see right from your wrist what types of notifications are coming in which is a big plus for me. The thing you have to remember though is this is not a smart watch, it’s an activity tracker so you can’t do things like answer the incoming call or respond to messages.
It works out good enough to let you know when to answer your phone or respond to messages.
If you are looking for a watch that allows you to answer phone calls or respond to texts right from your wrist, check out the Gear S2.
- Great for tracking your runs
- Receive smart notifications
- Battery life is great
- Able to change the watch faces
- Bands are replaceable
- Connects to satellite with no problem
- Light and durable
- Doesn’t have a built-in heart rate monitor
- Screen can be a bit dim
- Price is a little steep for my pocket
I recommend this watch because it basically has everything you would need and expect out of a fitness watch. Remember this is not a smart watch so don’t expect it to do anything too fancy.
A big plus for me is just the watch being waterproof, if you are going to spend your money and invest in a good fitness tracker, it at least has to be waterproof. You never can predict the weather and if things hit the fan, you want to be able to count on your fitness tracker to make it through the storm.
Another plus is having a battery life that could last you for a good while, I really don’t like the idea of constantly plugging in my watch every 2-3 days because my battery is giving out on me.
If you are a runner and you are looking at getting a good fitness tracker for your runs, I recommend the Garmin Forerunner 230 or the Garmin Forerunner 620. These watches will help you improve your run times and performance.
